HOW TO PLAY CHESS

Sport and games have different rules to play. In this post, we will be reading about how to play chess. sometimes people search for chess for kids, so by reading this post, child or adult both can learn how to play chess. Here a beginner can learn about chess pieces and how to set chess. after learning chess I am sure you will love to play chess.

Chess

It is an indoor game played between two players. It is played on a chessboard having eight squares in a row and eight in columns so total sixty-four squares. Each player has sixteen units of pieces by which chess is played. The sixteen units consist of one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns. The strongest unit is the queen while the weakest is a pawn but it just a general case because sometimes weak units could behave as deadly as the strong ones. Power and use of any unit depend on the game condition because on different conditions different units become useful. Chess is said to be originated from India before the 7th century. The current rules of chess were made in the 16th century.
The aim of playing the game is to win by checkmate. Checkmate is a term used when losers king has no safe place after being attacked by opponent units.

Chess set and positioning

How to set chess pieces on a chessboard? for setting chess pieces you must be having a good chessboard. A good chess board means it must have a clear number and alphabets present on the edges of the chessboard. These numbers are very useful in telling positions of any unit. here if you want to tell the position of any unit then simply look at the alphabet present horizontally from the box of that particular unit and then look at the number present vertically from that particular box, e.g d5,a3, etc.
      now for setting or placing units follow the steps given;

white set:
1. Place white king on e1.
2. Place white queen on d1.
3. Place white bishops on c1,f1.
4. Place white knights on the second position from corner i.e. b1,g1.
5. Place white rooks on both corners i.e. a1,h1.
6. Place all white eight pawns on second row from white side or seventh row from black side i.e. a2,b2,c2,d2,e2,f2,g2 and h2.

black set:
1. Place black king on e8.
2. Place black queen on d8.
3. Place black bishops on c8,f8.
4. Place black knights on the second position from corner i.e. b8,g8.
5. Place black rooks on both corners i.e. a8,h8.
6. Place all-black eight pawns on seventh row from white side or second row from black side i.e. a7,b7,c7,d7,e7,f7,g7 and h7.

Movements

If we talk about the movements of units then each unit has different. The pawn can just move forward in a straight line and attacks diagonally to the units in its sideline only. Bishop can only move and attack diagonally. Knight moves and attack two squares horizontally or vertically then one square sidewise. Rook is the second strongest unit after the queen. It moves and attacks horizontally or vertically. King moves and attacks in all directions but its effectiveness is only up to one box in either direction. Queen, the strongest among all could move and attack in all directions up to the available space, means it has the ability of king, rook, pawn and bishop. It can copy all units except knight.

Castling in chess

Note: Here I will be telling you all about w.r.t one side i.e one which is present at row no. 1 if you are at opposite side i.e initial position of your king is e8 then replace 1 with 8 in this heading about Castling.
So casting refers to one of the exceptional move used in chess under some conditions. Casting takes place between king and rook. One player can use this move only once a game. As we know that one player has two rooks so castling can also take place at two sides. Before getting ahead you must be aware of two sides on chess board, king side and queen side. We know that 'a' to 'h' is written horizontally on chess board. So king stands at 'e' and queen stands at 'd'. As you can notice  'a' is closer to 'd' while 'h' is closer to 'e' so if king does castling with the rook present at a1 then it is termed as 'Castling to the queen side' while if king does castling with the rook present at h1 then it is termed as 'Castling to the king side'.

How to do Castling?

So if you do castling to the queen side then as we know the king will be at e1 and rook will be at a1 so when castling takes place then king will skip one box and will come at c1 while rook will come at the opposite side of king i.e at d1.
Now if you do castling to the king side then again our king will be at e1 while rook will be at h1 so when castling takes place then king will skip one position and will come at g1 while rook will come at opposite side of king i.e at f1.

Rules of doing castling

There are certain rules under which you can do castling, these are;
  • There should not be any unit present between the king and the rook in that first horizontal line.
  • The king and the rook with whom castling is to be done must have not moved. Even if they came back to their original position, then also castling is not valid.
  • Your king must not be under check. If rook is under attack then castling can take place.
  • The empty places between the king and the rook must be free from any current attack from opponent units.

When to do castling and when not

Castling is a great move if used properly but if not then it could harm you. Castling can provide protection to your king. Castling depends on your game condition. Just see the situation, if your defence increases after castling then do it. Sometimes castling can be harmful to you so do it by noticing the future moves.

Promotion

Chess is a game where a small mistake could result in a big loss. In the same way, if a player is just ahead of only one pawn then it could be very beneficial for him/her.
You might be thinking that how could a pawn could result in a win. In general, it is not possible but it becomes possible by the rule of chess.
In this rule when a pawn of one side reaches another side then it could be transformed into any of the bigger units such as knight, bishop, rook or queen. Normally people choose queen at the place of pawn because of its strength but very few cases are also there when people opt for other units.
